Durban Foodie News

The secret is out and a new venue opens this week Thursday in the old Bangkok Wok Durban North (Kensington Drive) premises…
Nourish will serve Mediterranean focussed meals and I can’t wait to try it out!

My biggest find of the last few weeks has to be the new salad on the menu at Billy the BUMS. I dream about it – seriously! A bed of salad greens with carrots, tomato & cucumber and peppers, topped with chickpeas, lentils and feta for R50. I’ve discovered though that if you add a char-grilled chicken breast you have the BEST SALAD IN THE WORLD! (R60 with chicken)

The last few weeks have seen a few visits to Simply Fish in Florida Road, their linefish – dorado- has been superb as was the calamari platter for R89. A variety of calamari including tubes and tentacles, either stuffed with cheese, deep fried, grilled, or with cajun spices and savoury rice and chips – SCRUMMY!

I hadn’t been to Butcher Boys Florida Road  for months, so I hit it hard this last month, first on a Thursday night with the girls for their R7/oyster special. They were sublime, succulent, juicy and meaty – so extremely moreish. So it was very upsetting that they ran out!!! Will be back for them again though…
Second and third times were for my red meat fix – a cut I’ve never tried before and will return to time and again from now on – rib eye steak! Just the most tasty, juicy, succulent steak I’ve had in YEARS! Do yourself a favour and try it, you will not be sorry.

My all time favourite, Mos, beckoned over the weekend and it was the tried and tested lentil/feta calamari combo which did not disappoint. Seriously, if you have never tried one of these, you’re missing out on what has become a Durban institution. Just go, have one and then bask in the glory… delectable!

Chinese… it’s either very good or very dodgy (er doggy?) so any recommendations I take heed of. Popped into Maan Hing at Buxton’s centre in Glenwood a few weeks ago and had an awesome pork chow mein. Now I know it’s hard for chinese to stuff up chinese, but it can be a tad oily, oniony or bland or just plain MSG hell, but this was lovely and cheap! Even better!

In the same centre is the Butcher Block which does a mean Monday night special – eat as many ribs as you like for R79 which is a great deal for the guys! The ribs are lip-smackingly juicy and meaty and they do not hold back on your second or third portions… The girls will probably only handle one portion but R79 is not a bad price anyway.

I took my darling grandmother to St Clements this weekend for brunch and had the best scrambled eggs EVER! Light and fluffy with chopped chives served on health toast, the perfect breakfast. Nana’s toasted bacon and egg was also delicious.

Another great breakfast was at Europa Florida Road a few weeks ago, had roasted tomatoes and mushrooms on toast with balsamic glaze – can’t remember what it was actually called on the menu but it was good.
Also visited Nourish in Westville and had their health breakfast – natural yogurt with toasted almonds, muesli, fresh strawberries and honey. It was good but was served is a silly little glass that you could not get a spoon into and out of without making a helluva mess, so I emptied it into a bowl, much better.

Mall restaurants and coffee shops are usually dire so it’s great that a good franchise of Mugg & Bean has opened in La Lucia Mall. Their muffins are superb (blueberry delicious!!) and my favourite brunch snack – plain avo on health toast – is fabulous. Just the right amount of avo, cut up for you and served on yummy toast. They do a great frappe as well.

Am off to GBC this Thursday for a girls’ night out and can’t wait to sample the new burger menu – there are now 20 to choose from with prices now including fries!
