Winter in Durban is often our best season of the year and getting to enjoy it with a spectacular sea view and fresh seafood is high on my list of priorities – so what better place to do that than at the fabulous Oyster Box Hotel. I used to think it was just a place for a fancy dinner or high tea, but actually there’s so much more going on, I’d thought I’d share some of the events they have planned from now until August:
Their new Oyster, Salmon & Sushi Bar is on my list of must-try’s in the next few weeks – order from a selection of sushi, fresh oysters, home-cured salmon, Asian-inspired tacos, prawn cocktails and prawns or crayfish. It’s open from Monday to Friday between midday and 8pm and items from the a la carte Seafood Menu can be ordered individually on request. There’s also live music each evening between 6:30pm & 9:30pm.
This weekend to celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday 21st June, book for lunch or dinner at R150/person and enjoy mouthwatering slow-roasted beef short rib, served with baked potato or chips and veges, along with a complimentary ice cold draught beer.
Then on Friday 26th June, The Oyster Box & KWV present a free Brandy tasting in the Hotel Lobby on between 2pm and 5pm.
Each Tuesday between 6pm and 10pm, enjoy Cocktail Time in The Lighthouse Bar – watch the talented Mixologists shaking & serving the perfect cocktail.
A John van G Make-up Day will be held in The Spa at The Oyster Box, on Tuesday 28 July between 8am and 5pm. The spa therapists offer 75-minute treatments, including skin analysis & make-up application, as well as a step by step guide to applying to your own make-up correctly. Cost: R400/person.
Cat Simoni’s new show, Cat Sings Judy, celebrating the legendary Judy Gardland takes place on Thursday 30 July, featuring the music of some of America’s finest 20th Century songwriters including the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Harold Arlen. Cost R390/person which includes a 3-course dinner and the show. Booking essential.
Celebrate Women’s Day with a Women’s Day Brunch in The Pearl Room on Tuesday 4 August.

On Thursday 20 August, join Floris Smith, Executive Chef at Bushmans Kloof, in The Grill Room for a 5-course food & wine dinner, capturing the essence of the Cederberg and the Cape Floral Kingdom, incorporating ingredients from the indigenous Rooibos and Fynbos plants, as well as typical South African dishes faeturing Cape Malay influences.

Don’t forget, The Curry Buffet at The Oyster Box is available daily on the Ocean Terrace, for lunch and dinner. Enjoy their delicious signature Tandoori Chicken along with an impressive selection of curries which include meat, fish and vegetarian options, along with a gorgeous view of the Indian Ocean. Each Saturday night, between 6pm and 11pm, there’s a Dinner Dance (just like the old days!) in The Grill Room. Enjoy live music and dancing along with exceptional cuisine. Cost R550/person. Booking is essential.
And then the well-known High Tea still takes place everyday in The Palm Court between 2:30pm and 5pm. The table groans with sumptuous treats, from freshly baked scones, pastries and quiches, to exotic cakes, finger sandwiches & savouries. Cost R220/person. Booking is essential.
Or for a later evening option, between 6pm and 9pm, enjoy the Evening Indulgence in The Palm Court – select from an assortment of pastries, freshly-baked scones with jam and cream and exquisite cakes, served with your choice of tea or coffee – the perfect after dinner treat. Cost R85/person.
