South Africa celebrates Heritage Day on 24th September and the Red Carnation Group of Hotels have had their chefs conjure up a proudly South African Heritage Month menu. We’re lucky to have these dishes as our own truly unique contribution to the cuisine world!
There are 3  special ‘heritage dishes, which will be on offer at the South African Red Carnation Hotels – The Twelve Apostles Hotel & SpaBushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat and The Oyster Box Hotel.

Twelve Apostles Executive Chef , Christo Pretorius has devised a ‘Gourmet Boerie Roll’, a somewhat more luxurious version of South Africa’s stalwart boerewors roll!
Enjoyed around numerous braais in SA, this one will put yours to shame, as he’s given it a contemporary makeover and will be serving venison wors on a toasted baguette, garnished with spicy tomato smoor & beetroot chutney, with crispy sweet potato wedges. Take that boet!

Floris Smith, Executive Chef at Bushman’s Kloof, is renowned for his take on bobotie – a traditional South African dish consisting of spiced minced meat, baked with an egg-based topping, which dates back to the days of the Dutch East India Company in the 17th century. His specialty ‘Cederberg Lamb Shank Bobotie’, is topped with a special Rooibos egg custard, in honour of the lodge’s Cederberg location and is made with curry powder, leaving a slight ‘tang’.
I can only imagine how flipping delicious this is and have put it on my ‘to-eat-before-I-die’ list!

And Executive Chef Kevin Joseph, at The Oyster Box in Umhlanga stays true to his Durban colours with his famous chicken ‘Bunny Chow’.
Ask any Durbanite for their suggestion on their cities most recognisable dish and they’ll tell you it’s a Bunny Chow, or ‘Bunny’.
The exact origin of this massive curry ‘sandwich’ is an ongoing debate, but is thought to date back to the 1940s and it’s meant to be eaten with your hands, so be prepared to be elbow deep – but smiling – in delicious curry sauce. .
This one is served mildly spiced, with the chicken curry & gravy inside a hollowed-out loaf of bread, with the remaining bread on top.

All 3 dishes will be available at each of the hotels and are priced at R115 each.
