Last month I attended a Savior Brand Co leather-making class, as part of their First Thursday’s event. This working leather studio + coffee shop + retail space was one of the first spots to open up on Station Drive and they pretty much pioneered the influx of cool, into what is now a thriving creative hub. Max Pienaar heads up Savior with his leathersmith sidekick Jason and the nicest crew of guys in the coffee shop and leather studio. The best part – not only is their stuff super slick, it’s all handmade, the old fashioned way, with attention to detail and superb craftsmanship, oh and lots of love.
So every First Thursday they do a class which anyone can book and then attend. For those not familiar with the First Thursday concept, it takes place on the First Thursday of each month, where the creatives, curators and purveyors in an area stay open till late, to let you experience what’s up in their hood. There’s always loads on at the Station Drive First Thursday’s – you can check out some of the happenings in this post. Savior host a leather making class and at the last event, we got to make our very own Jozi Slim Wallet – by hand!
Here’s what the Savior-made wallets look like
and this is the one I made :)
Everything from gluing the edges, hand stitching, riveting and sanding was done by me – ok and some help from Max & Jason ;) But mostly me – so chuffed! Someone special got it for father’s day and he loved it.
It was so cool to actually see the whole process of how an item like this is made and I have a new found respect for this kind of workmanship – it took me 2 hours to make these babies! So if you are looking for something very cool to get up to this Thursday, or any other in future, check out the Savior facebook page for updates on what they’re making – this week it’s a leather moleskine journal – bummed I can’t make it!
Check out the event for more details here.
Thanks to Max and Jason for such a cool evening!
