When art and personality collide, you know you’re in for an experience.
When that experience is both whimsical and deeply emotional, you get a glimpse at the talent of a true artist. I have long admired the talent of Terry Angelos, a Durban watercolour and mixed medium artist, who has recently opened a little gallery space in The Commune, on Station Drive in Durban.
Her work gravitates towards nature, with the latest collection showcasing a menagerie of flowers, leaves, succulents, sprigs, seeds and shapes, using watercolour and then pen to create a quirky, yet delicate representation of the natural world as she sees it.
The gallery space at The Commune will showcase Terry’s latest original collections, as well as some pieces from previous ones – if you can pick up one of her mixed medium shadow boxes, do so! She will also be hosting art/therapy classes in the space, for anyone wanting to experiment with watercolour and pen – limited experience or not! I attended her first class and it was amazing – not only did I manage to keep quiet throughout, I lost myself in a swirl of paint and relished the opportunity to learn a few tricks from the master herself. Rest assured Terry – your talent is under zero threat, our amoebas will only be loved by our own mothers ;)
Terry pioneered the pop-up art scene in Durban, with beautifully curated spaces in unexpected places, providing a platform for emerging artists and designers to showcase their work, thereby exposing some of Durban’s unknown talent. This success lead to the opening of her own store, Anthology, which sells clothes, accessories, art and decor pieces in Windermere Centre and she curates the Homegrown Fair each year at the House & Garden Show.
As the gallery space is situated inside The Commune, you can take a peek at the collections during their usual opening times, but appointments to see Terry are by prior arrangement.
She will be at the gallery each First Thursday evening – which is tonight in Durban.
