Not many people know, but I’m of Italian descent.
My grandfather’s surname was Chiazzari and when you say that in the dinkum Italian accent it sounds very cool.
I have family in Italy – in Liguria – and there’s a massive family tree there with mine and my sister’s names right at the bottom of a long line of descendants with very Italian names and history.
So it’s only natural that Italian food is in my blood and I love it.
Don’t ask me to go to one of those family buffet Italian restaurants {no names mentioned} – it just won’t happen – never.
But invite me to Lupa Osteria and I will wind my way all the way up the hill to Hillcrest to eat there! {Us town folk think Hillcrest is very far, but seriously it’s not}
Everything from the minute you walk in the doors screams Italian – it’s vibey and it smells of all those insanely good Italian aromas like real homemade tomato sauce, parmesan, baking foccacias with garlic and mozzarella and wood-fired pizzas. {yeah you just licked your lips hey?}
The decor is so up my alley – everytime I go there I want to change my flipping flat around – it’s so cool!
Subway tiles, industrial lights, deep buttoned seating and mirrors to give it a modern edge all make you feel like you are in another country, let alone Durbs.
But it’s still relaxed and affordable and the service is attentive, though not intrusive – my best kind of service – nothing worse than either being ignored for ages or being bothered by an over eager teen-waitron who asks the same question 10 times.
They do a kid’s menu too and have a bar for drinks before you eat, or just because you don’t feel like going straight home after your shop at woolies downstairs ;)
Pensioners receive a 30% discount off their bill during lunch hours from Monday to Saturday.
So, if you have never been, sort yourself out and if you’re a regular, lucky you!
Lupa is owned by Bellevue Café’s, Chris Black and Guy Cluver. {Bellevue Cafe is another one of my all-time favourites}
