Win with Thandana

A few weeks ago I visited the team at Thandana, to tour their Durban workshop and catch up with founder Carla Ashton, who’s taken the success and growth of Thandana in her stride since 2010. It’s always so awesome to see a local company flourish from small beginnings to great things and to stay true to their brand ethos while doing so.

The brand originally started with a small range of bags and luggage, using locally produced, hand-printed fabric, which is laminated for protection and durability, but the range has since extended to include a full leather range, including overnight bags, wallets, laptop bags, briefcases and clutches. They’ve also recently rebranded, with the icon in their new logo derived from the Zulu symbol for ‘&’, along with the word Thandana which means ‘To love one another’.

They now supply stores both in South Africa and internationally and their bags are highly coveted by fashionistas, baby mamas and travelers alike, as well as those looking for an everyday luggage brand which fits seamlessly into their lifestyle.

It was great to get some behind-the-scenes insight into the brand and see how they make each beautiful bag by hand in the Durban workshop, even lining them with their custom made monogrammed fabric and finishing each with genuine South African leather.

I’ve had my eye on an overnight bag for ages and cannot wait to pack this one for a weekend away in the berg soon – how beaut is the fabric!? It’s laminated on the sides so it’s easy to wipe down, with the base and trims made of leather, plus it’s super roomy and fits heaps inside! I also have my eye on a leather tablet sling bag to use every day as a handbag, which I can fit my iPad into for those days I’m not travelling with a briefcase. To be honest I have my eye on quite a few things in the range and after seeing the pics from their recent lifestyle shoot I’m ogling most of it!
